The NBME will be making some significant changes to the USMLE step 1 exam that will be effective as of May 9,2016.
Here are the summaries of what students should expect
- The numbers of questions items per block will decrease from 44 to 40- This means the questions stems will be much longer than previous years with more detailed clinical vignettes. This change also allows you to spend more time on each question.
- The total number of questions will decrease from 308 to 280.
- The length of the exam will remain the same.
- The scores from the old USMLE format with 308 questions and new format (280) will be comparable.
The passing scores are unchanged. USMLE Step 1: 192, Step 2 CK: 209 and Step 3: 196.
